Bullies
By Michael Breault
The bullies knew me. Back in the 50’s and 60’s, they targeted me because I was a short, non-athletic book and music nerd. They were secretive (and often relentless) about their taunts. They did not approach when adults were around, or if friends surrounded me. The bullies typically operated out of earshot, away from prying eyes, focused on their target, gaining strength from the power they exerted over me. My weapons were generally confidence, friends, family, and not blaming myself.
Bullies are still here and operating insidiously. At Sutton Elementary, we are proactive, realizing that there will be some students who attempt bullying as a means to build their own self-esteem. The SAFETY, RESPECT and RESPONSIBILITY program begins on the first day of school with an assembly where I present these three tenets we live by, and touch upon the differences between tattling and responsible reporting. The anti-bullying campaign continues in third grade where we invite Kaleidoscope Theatre to present their enlightening production, highlighting the aspects and consequences of bullying acts. Their points are further emphasized through teacher lessons at all grades using the SECOND STEP program and Carol McMahon’s social groups. Bully Boxes are placed throughout the school so that students can report anonymously any act that could be perceived as bullying.
Educational posters highlighting “Do You Know a Bully?” reinforce important points in dealing with bullies. Positive choices at our school are rewarded with Caught in the Acts announced via intercom, copied and sent home, displayed on the bulletin board and listed in Chalk Talk.
Investigations are ongoing. Carol McMahon and I frequently “tease” out what might be just considered age-appropriate social mishaps vs. bullying.
Some of the prompts we might use with students are:
Tell me what happenedWere you able to tell them to stop, ignore them or walk away?
Has this happened before?
Who was involved?
Our emphasis has always been on responsible reporting. It is disheartening to receive a phone call or student report that indicates tht his has been happeinging all year. We cannot intervene if we don't know that incidents are happening, keeping in mind that the bully does not like an audience, and may attempt to operate in secrecy. Reporting also needs to continue if the behavior doesn't stop.
There is often confusion, and because of recent TV coverage, every incident might be considered an act of bullying. We cannot rush to judgement, but investigate all circumstances, and provide counseling and strategies for the bullied and counseling ad consequences for the bully. Fortunately, we do not have many bullies at Sutton Elementary due to our proactive efforts and quick response to responsible reporting. Please continue your support by keeping us informed of situations reported to you at thome. With your assistance, we will continue our efforts at school to help students safely navigate through their social development
